Heavy Burdens

In recent years I have become a pretty proficient  insomniac.  I've tried ever trick in the book to beat it.  Not excercising too late in the day, no caffeine after a certain time of day, a warm bath an hour or so before retiring for the evening.  I've even tried my own brand of reverse logic- playing Hockey at 10:00 pm at night, drinking coffee at 7pm meetings to see if it might bring about the long anticipated slumber.  No such luck. To me long, sleepless nights become a  heavy burden.   Functioning in the world of daytime people become a special kind of challenge when your brain and your body are trying to run on disrupted and minimal sleep. Sometimes in the dark of night I feel despair creep around me as the rest of my house slumbers; but in the midst of  many of my sleepless nights I hear the word of God come to me,  " Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest".  Rest. It's a beautiful word to a tired body.  It's a beautiful word to a tired soul.  It's a promise given to you and to me.  God gives us rest.  God is our hope, our strength and our life.  It is in God alone we find all that we need to go on when we cannot find the strength or the stamina. Rest in God is powerful and life sustaining.
